The other thing to caution you about - in downloading mods, I highly recommend you only download mods from trusted sites, like links provided in the minecraft forums and curse sites.Welcome to r/SteamDeck, the subreddit for Valve's handheld computer. This is the forge version I have installed btw. Then there are 3 different profiles for game version 1.7.10. The next profile is called 'stable', using a game folder called 'stable', and that is set to whatever the current stable release is - I believe right now it is 1.11.2. I call one 'snap', which is in a game folder called 'snap', and that is set to play whatever the latest snapshot is. I have created, for my son, 5 different profiles. Forge, upon the client installation, will create a new profile in the default MC launcher - again, you can change the game directory as needed to allow multiple 'versions' of the game to be launched. If you want to deal with mods on your own, you will very likely need to install 'forge' for the version of the game that you will be modding. Technic, and other launchers like that, do the same thing - they create specific directories for each of the modpacks you play with, they just automate the process of dealing with mod configurations and all the necessary files that mods require. Use a different game directory for each profile, and then your mods go into the 'mod' folder within that directory. The 'game directory' part of each profile is one way you can keep them all differentiated. The key is the profile - you can have one, or multiple profiles for you son, and one for you, and one for your server, etc. You can do all of this with the default minecraft launcher.
